Substance misuse and violent crime: Swedish population study.
نویسندگان
چکیده
Many studies have reported strong associations between substance misuse and violent crime. But the population impact of people diagnosed with substance use disorders on such crime is not known. Calculating the population impact and the relative importance of different classes of drugs is necessary to estimate the likely public health effect of any developments in services and treatment interventions in preventing violent crime. To investigate the overall impact of substance misuse on violent crime, we estimated the population attributable risk using data from high quality national psychiatric and crime registers in Sweden from 1988 to 2000.

Depression and violence: a Swedish population study
BACKGROUND Depression increases the risk of a range of adverse outcomes including suicide, premature mortality, and self-harm, but associations with violent crime remain uncertain. We aimed to determine the risks of violent crime in patients with depression and to investigate the association between depressive symptoms and violent crime in a cohort of twins. METHODS We conducted two studies. ...

We found that 16% of all violent crimes in Sweden during 1988-2000 were committed by people who had hospital discharge diagnoses of alcohol misuse, and more than a tenth of all violent crimes were committed by patients diagnosed as having misused drugs. Treatment services aimed at alcohol and drug misusers can potentially reduce violent offending. The approach of population attributable risk is...
متن کاملThe impact of neighbourhood deprivation on adolescent violent criminality and substance misuse: a longitudinal, quasi-experimental study of the total Swedish population.
BACKGROUND A number of studies suggest associations between neighbourhood characteristics and criminality during adolescence and young adulthood. However, the causality of such neighbourhood effects remains uncertain. METHODS We followed all children born in Sweden from 1975-1989 who lived in its three largest cities by the age of 15 years and for whom complete information was available about...
متن کاملRisk of Violent Crime in Individuals with Epilepsy and Traumatic Brain Injury: A 35-Year Swedish Population Study
BACKGROUND Epilepsy and traumatic brain injury are common neurological conditions, with general population prevalence estimates around 0.5% and 0.3%, respectively. Although both illnesses are associated with various adverse outcomes, and expert opinion has suggested increased criminality, links with violent behaviour remain uncertain. METHODS AND FINDINGS We combined Swedish population regist...
متن کاملAnabolic androgenic steroids and violent offending: confounding by polysubstance abuse among 10,365 general population men.
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Anabolic androgenic steroid (AAS) use is associated with aggressive and violent behaviour, but it remains uncertain if this relationship is causal in humans. We examined the link between AAS use and violent crime while controlling for polysubstance abuse and additional suggested risk factors for violence. DESIGN Cross-sectional study of a population-based sample. SETTING...
